Meet the Giants of Granite of the Alps

The Grimsel region is one of the most majestic and wild areas of Switzerland. Nestled in the middle of the Swiss Alps and in an area only accessible in summer, a granite landscape filled with glaciers and lakes unveils a paradise for the landscape photographer. All over the area are rocks covered with lichens, vertical cliffs that plunge into the Grimselsee lake, glaciers like the Oberaar and Unteraar, peaks like the Schreckhorn and Lauteraarhorn that glow in the morning alpenglow ... In the plateau that lies at the top of the pass, a myriad of small lakes in the granite become the mirrors where the alpine sky is reflected, especially at sunset and dusk, when the last light of the sun ignites the giants of rock.

Weather permitting, we will also visit and photograph the glacier of the Rhone, in the direction of the Furka pass. From above the valley, this glacier allows for really interesting photographic opportunities around the textures of rock and glacier crevasses.

During the night, we might play with night photography, under the starry alpine sky.

The variety of subjects in the area will give us a very wide range of photographic options: photos of the wide landscape, photos of details, vegetation, waterfalls, alpine gorges, etc.

To be within reach of the most photogenic places at the time of the best light, we will be located at the Berghaus mountain hotel. At the hotel we will not only sleep and eat, but also celebrate our post-processing sessions, where we will also take advantage of our comfortable accommodation for critique and feedback on some of the photographs already created by the photographers.

The Grimsel region is one of the wildest areas in Switzerland. In the middle of the Swiss Alps and in an area accessible only in summer, a granite landscape filled with glaciers and lakes unveils a paradise for the landscape photographer.

Photograph one of the most dramatic areas of the entire Swiss Alps, where towering giants of granite rise from the depths of the valleys. We will not only photograph the broad landscape, but also the intimate one.

We will explore hidden valleys and photograph mysterious gorges, through which the roaring waters from the upper glaciers rush down toward the valley. This will be a wonderful place to work with long exposures.

There is something legendary about the Alpine passes criss-crossing the steep slopes of the central valleys of Switzerland. During this workshop, we will get to photograph various side valleys not far from Grimsel.

Rafael Rojas (Master Hasselblad 2014, MA Photography, ARPS) is a Swiss-Spanish fine art photographer, author and lecturer whose work frequently focuses on concepts like time, decay and renewal, the raw latent energy found in the landscape and the ephemeral qualities of existence. He strives to encapsulate concept, emotion and spirituality in his work.

Rafael has been involved in teaching since he was in his teens, and well before he took a camera for the first time. First helping out young students, then teaching undergrads and later on as a University lecturer. Nowadays, as a full time professional photographer, lecturer, author and creativity mentor, he deeply enjoys helping other photographers grow as artists, slow down and look at the world with different eyes.

He is the founder of the online Master COURSE "Photography with Intent", a unique, comprehensive and structured one year course devoted to the whole photographic process from message to print.

Rafael is also co-owner and co-director of “Platinum Press Editions”, an independent finer art photography publishing company devoted to the creation of photography books of the highest quality.

Rafael speaks English, French, Spanish, Romanian and Italian.

Anca Minican, the partner of Rafael Rojas, provides a very special touch to all our photographic workshops and trips.  Trained as an architect, she is a true lover of nature and the wilderness and always accompanies Rafael on his photographic expeditions all over the planet.

Her broad experience in the corporate world, her professionalism and her methodical and serious approach make her a valuable asset for the organization, on-site logistics and the support to customers during our workshops and photographic trips. She also plays a key role in the team building and knows how to create an amicable environment with a personal touch as all our clients can testify!

Anca is co-owner and co-founder of “Platinum Press Editions”, an exclusive editorial house specialized in the creation of unique fine art photography books of the highest quality. She is also part of the management staff of the online Master COURSE “Photography with Intent”.
